The New London Fire Department
New London's first fire engine was placed in service in 1767 with the first Engine Company being established in 1786. In 1805, the Connecticut Legislature empowered New London to establish a Fire Department. Between 1802 and 1922, numerous Companies were formed, disbanded and reorganized.
Today, the Fire Department is a career department, manning three Engines, two Trucks and two Ambulances located in three fire stations. A shift supervisor, three station officers and fourteen Firefighters staff each of the four work groups. The Fire Prevention Division consists of the Fire Marshal and three Fire Inspectors. The department serves an area of approximately 6 square miles and protects a diverse population of roughly 25,000 people.
Fire Headquarters is located at 289 Bank Street in downtown New London. The North Fire Station is located at 240 Broad Street at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue. The South Fire Station is at 25 Lower Boulevard just west of Montauk Avenue. Fire calls total approximately 2,500 per year including Emergency Medical Service assists. Total ambulance calls continue to rise, and average above 4,200 per year. Notable locations in the New London Fire Department response area consist of the Pfizer Global Development Facility, Connecticut College, Mitchell College, Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, the United States Coast Guard Academy, Interstate 95, Amtrak Northeast Corridor, Providence and Worchester Railroad, the Admiral Shear State Pier which provides dockage for cruise and cargo ships. There is a wide variety of buildings in New London ranging from single family homes to commercial and residential high-rises.
New London is home to the annual Sailfest event held the second weekend of each July. Vendors and entertainers congregate in the downtown waterfront park area for great time of food and entertainment on New London's waterfront. Sailfest attracts huge crowds especially on fireworks night when Grucci launches one of its largest shows in the nation. Crowds have been estimated at 100,000 people. This obviously presents unique hazards to New London Fire Department which has adapted by incorporating roving bicycle units manned by firefighters trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and carrying medical equipment.
Major fires and other disasters have had a major impact on New London. The hurricane of 1938 flooded most of the downtown area and caused a major fire that destroyed dozens of buildings. In 1985 fire destroyed the New London Mills Complex on Pequot Avenue, which is now the site of the Pfizer Global Development Facility.
Today, the New London Firefighters play an active role in many community activities. The Firefighters administer two scholarship trust funds that provide scholarships to graduating seniors. The Firefighters also sponsor several youth sports teams, donate to the Connecticut Firefighters Burn Camp, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and participate in numerous community fundraisers for such organizations as the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Alpha 1 Foundation and Hospice.
